PATH belonging to a category called "rapid transit system" (in operation since 1908) mass transportation rail network, hit another ridership high of 76.6 million passengers in 2010, statistics show, surpassing a previous record of 74.9 million in 2008.

The owner and operator of PATH is the Port Authority of NY & NJ, which took over the management duties from Hudson and Manhattan Railroad (H&M), in 1962. The 13.8 mile (22.2 km) rail network today connects two states, New York and New Jersey. It supports 13 stations at major junctions allowing millions of customers to travel quickly and efficiently across and between the Hudson River.

The modernization program, aimed at car and infrastructure replacements, is in its 3rd year. A total of 344 new cars have already been deployed, renovations at each station are on-going, and the switch to state-of-the-art computerization of the PATH signal system are in the works. All plans are on-schedule for completion by 2017.

“Our multi billion-dollar commitment to transform PATH into a 21st century rail system has paid dividends. More people are taking notice of what PATH has to offer and are choosing it as their preferred mode of travel between New York and New Jersey", said Port Authority Chairman David Samson.

The Harrison station has a $75 million dollar renovation slice of the plan attached. Between 2009 and 2013, the fruits of the renovation is slated to become reality. The new station will feature longer wider platforms, and "street-level-to-platform elevators", and architectural additions and modifications to the aesthetics.

During a typical weekday, approximately 256,000 trips are made on the PATH system. Out of all of the stations, in 2010, the Harrison station exhibited the strongest weekday growth of all PATH stations at 8.7 percent.
