Google received the official nod from the European Union on their August 2011 proposition to acquire Motorola Mobilty Inc, which produces and markets the Droid series of hand held devices. The deal has been purported to be worth $12.5 Billion.
The EU executive, which has 27 member European Union regulators, said the deal “would not significantly change the market for operating systems and patents for these devices”. Following the approval of the EU, the United States Department of Justice followed suit and as well, approved the deal between the two known brands. The US DOJ commented on their procedure: “In all of the transactions, the division conducted an in-depth analysis into the potential ability and incentives of the acquiring firms to use the patents they proposed acquiring to foreclose competitors”. Google is expected to pick-up close to 17,000 patents which Motorola Mobility owned. The previous concerns from the Department of Justice and the European Commission was precisely that of Google acquiring such volume of patents, which could give the tech giant a head and shoulders advantage over leading competitors, such as Apple. As predicted, the “patent wars” is heating up in the telecom field, with companies like Apple and Samsung trying to tighten up their patent rights, hoping to influence and control the market. Google’s next approval steps are with China, Israel, and Taiwan.
